INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Update 

The stock market is stuck in a tight range. And all eyes are on the Fed. 

 

The announcement is at 2pm EST. I follow a number of quant traders and one of them posted interesting info. 

 

Quantifiable Edges posted these stats. He showed how the S&P 500 has performed between the time of the announcement (2pm EST) and the market close on Fed Days since Mr. Powell took over.

 

He found the market has struggled. Out of 12 trades only 4 or 33.33% were profitable assuming you buy at 2pm EST and sell at the market close.

 

We’ll see if it likes tomorrow’s announcement any better.

Uber announced it will begin testing its self-driving cars in Dallas, Texas in November.

 

Initially, human drivers will operate the vehicles to collect mapping data and driving scenarios. 

 

Uber will then reproduce driving scenarios in simulation.

In defiance of Beto O’Dork, Alpha Dog Firearms ran a ‘Beto special’ on AR-15s. It priced them at $349.99 below the $395 price Beto posted on Twitter. 

 

The rifles sold out in less than four hours.

 

Thanks Beto on behalf of all the new AR-15 gun purchasers who probably would not have bought them if it’s wasn’t for you.

Brent Crude soared almost 20% because of strikes on a Saudi refinery, Abqaiq – the world’s largest oil processing facility. 

 

The algorithms went completely crazy.

Central banks are cutting interest rates across the board.

 

On Thursday, the European Central Bank announced rate cuts and a 20 billion euro stimulus. Interest rates are now at their lowest point ever (-0.5%).

 

There are seven other central bank meetings in September – U.S. Fed, Switzerland, England, Japan, New Zealand and Mexico.

 

The Fed rate announcement is on Wednesday and the investors are expecting another 25 basis point cut. In addition, investors will be looking for Powell’s remarks about the trade war and the rest of the year.

Apple held an uneventful product launch event last week. 

They announced a new iPhone 11, new Watch Series 5 and entry level iPad.  

 

The iPhone got a camera upgrade and it now features three cameras on the back including an ultra-wide lens.

 

But there is something mainstream media didn’t talk about. It’s the fact that Apple is working on it’s first 5G enabled phones – iPhone 12. 

 

My advice is to wait for iPhone 12 since iPhone 11 is not much of an upgrade.

Why The Hong Kong Protest Is Imporant

Demonstrations in Hong Kong continue. Many protesters waved American flags and wore Trump 2020 gear.

 

One of the reasons for the demonstrations was the extradition treaty. It would allow virtually anyone in Hong Kong to be picked up and detained in Mainland China, a country in which judges follow the orders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The fear is the new law would target not just criminals but also political activists.

 

The CCP is the most vicious dictatorship in the world. We know what they are capable of. And the only reason they can remain in power is because China is a totalitarian surveillance state.

 

The protesters want the U.S. to support the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which would penalize Hong Kong or China for undermining the basic democratic rights of Hong Kong citizens.

 

Why is that important? 

 

One topic that unites everybody in America and in the world is the Hong Kong protest. Both the politicians and the people came together because of Hong Kong police brutality and the arrogance of the CCP.

 

Chinese President Xi does not have a good plan to deal with the situation. Ideally, he would like to go in and do a brutal put down because he doesn’t want this contagion to spread to Mainland China. 

 

On the other hand, he knows he can’t have another Tiananmen Square. In 1989, the protests started on April 15 and were forcibly suppressed on June 4 when the government declared martial law and sent the military to occupy central parts of Beijing. It became known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre because the troops with assault rifles and tanks fired at the demonstrators trying to block the military’s advance into Tiananmen Square. To this day, we don’t know how many innocent people died that day. 

 

President Trump has provided stability in this incident. And he has been over accommodating. He asked President Xi for a meeting. He also said President Xi can solve this in 15 minutes if he listened to the protesters. President Trump even said he we would fly to Hong Kong or China to meet with President Xi.

 

The big question is, is this a Chinese’s internal issue or is this something much bigger?

 

I think it’s much bigger. This is an international incident and the West needs to back the protesters. The world is not ready to accept another Tiananmen Square.

 

Hong Kong is a jewel with Chinese people and English common law, an unstoppable combination. Hong Kong is also the third largest capital market after New York and London. The CCP needs Hong Kong to access the capital markets, the trade and the growth. And if they lose it, Chinese economy would go into a death spiral. 

 

And if the Chinese economy would start to collapse because of CCP’s actions, they would lose legitimacy. And the freedom movement would spread across Mainland China. And if that happens, this could be the beginning of the end of the CCP. 

 

The stakes are high. The protesters are not going to back down. And the West has to stand up. 

 

All eyes are on the U.S. Everyone in China is watching to what degree can the U.S. deter the CCP from violence against the people. 

 

But ultimately, the only people that can get rid of the CCP are the Chinese people. And they would love to have President Trump’s support.

I said yesterday that I expect the market to make a run at its all-time high. 

 

And that’s exactly what happened today. 

 

Why? 

 

1. Trade War – President Donald Trump is delaying tariffs

2. Fed – the market is expecting another 0.25 point rate cut next week

3. Value Stocks – investors are moving from momentum to value

 

It won’t take much to push the market to its all-time high. However, the typical action going into the Fed meeting next Wednesday is for stocks to decline on Friday and Monday and then rally on Tuesday ahead of the meeting. 

 

Trump Advisers Consider Interim China Deal to Delay Tariffs

McDonald’s made a big acquisition on Tuesday. 

 

They acquired voice tech startup Apprente in order to integrate its AI technology into the food chain’s drive-thrus, according to Engadget.

 

The AI can handle “complex, multilingual, multi-accent and multi-item conversational ordering,” allowing for “faster, simpler and more accurate order taking,” according to the report.

 

McDonald’s plans to roll out self-service kiosks across all US restaurant locations by 2020 – reducing the need to employ as many human cashiers.

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Update 

The S&P 500 is making another run at the all-time high (3,027.98). 

 

The S&P 500 futures jumped to 3,020 last night on reports that President Trump is delaying the China tariffs for 15 days. 

 

President Trump said:

 

“At the request of the Vice Premier of China, Liu He, and due to the fact that the People’s Republic of China will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary on October 1st, we have agreed, as a gesture of good will, to move the increased Tariffs on 250 Billion Dollars worth of goods (25% to 30%), from October 1st to October 15th.”

 

It looks to me we can take out the all-time high. However, the conditions are getting quite overbought. 

 

And I expect to see a pull back in the S&P 500 before the rally continues. It’s generally unusual to see the S&P 500 raising into the Fed meeting which is next week.

According to a new IBM study, 120 million works across the world may need to be retrained due to automation driven by AI over the next three years.

 

However, AI will also create new jobs. But the challenge will be to retrain workers to fill these new jobs. 

 

And the companies will need to figure out how to close this “skill gap”.

Special election was held in North Carolina’s ninth congressional district on Tuesday night.

 

Why?

 

The district seat has been empty in the U.S. House of Representatives since January, due to allegations of election ballot irregularities and refusal to certify the results of the 2018 midterms.

 

President Trump held a rally in North Carolina before the election to support Republican Dan Bishop.

 

The result?

 

Dan Bishop won and Democrats got another participation trophy.

 

It’s looking good for 2020.

The S&P 500 dropped to 2,957 yesterday.

 

However, the selling pressure wasn’t very strong. 

 

If we look at High Yield Bonds (HYG) which is generally a market leading indicator, they made a new all-time high. 

 

And that’s one of the reasons why I believe we won’t see a sharp decline in stocks for now.

 

Let’s see what the Fed says next week.

AOC is still talking about impeachment despite the fact that the House has yet to hold a full impeachment vote, as Democrats fall over 80 votes shorts of a pro-impeachment majority.

“I want to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment of this president knowing his corruption, having it on the record … because this is outrageous to protect the amount of lawlessness.” she said.

I have yet to hear of an impeachable offense by President Trump. The best one I heard of what illegal use of a sharpie. I hope they go with that..

The U.S Department of Agriculture release a report showing 6.2 million individuals dropped off food stamps since February 2017.

And that’s a big win for President Trump.

The Trump administration also released a “public charge rule” last month which would deny green cards to immigrants or make it harder for them to obtain them if they have a history of using welfare benefits such as food stamps.

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Update 

I wrote about the fact that gold was overextended over the past few weeks. 

And over the past 3 days, gold sold off pretty hard. The gold futures were trading below $1,500 in overnight session. 

Traders who were short gold should think about taking some profits here. It’s very likely gold will bounce back for a few days and gives us another opportunity to go short.

I still think there is more downside for gold in the weeks ahead.

WeWork is an office-leasing company. They purchase real estate (sometimes just a floor in an office building) and transforms it into smaller offices. 

WeWork is a highly anticipated IPO. And SoftBank (the main shareholder) is now urging them to shelve the IPO. 

Why?

Concerns about valuation. SoftBank made a second bet earlier this year at a valuation of $47 billion. 

 

Reuters reported earlier that WeWork is considering slashing the valuation to $20 billion. And that’s bad news for SoftBank. 

It’s a good reminder to always be rational when investing your money. Being greedy doesn’t work and sometimes even the big tech investors like SoftBank miss….

President Trump held a rally in North Carolina yesterday. 

Here are some sound bites if you missed it 

President Trump: “Democrats event want to give free health care to illegal immigrants. As long as I’m your president, I will never ever let Democrats take away your health care and give it away free to people that have entered our country illegally.” #AmericaFirst #MAGA 

 

President Trump: “[Democrats] want to have open borders… Every inch of wall that we put up is vital, and we’re putting miles and miles. And we intend by next year at the end of the year to have anywhere between 400 and 500 miles of wall built”

Broader arrests are plummeting – down 60% since May. 

Why?

President Trump’s immigration crackdown. He is the first President who got Mexico to take action. 

US immigration authorities arrested 64,000 migrants at the southern border in August – approximately 22% fewer people than July, and a 60% decrease from the 130,000 apprehensions in May, according to a Monday statement by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan. 

And as Politico notes, “The decline in border traffic — if sustained — could amount to a major victory for Trump as he heads into the 2020 election”

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Update 

It was a relatively quite weekend – no crazy headlines hit the wire. 

 

In case you missed my latest thesis for the stock market action, check it out here.  

 

The punchline: I think we will have a rally in the stock market and gold and bonds will significantly decline.

 

Let’s see what happens this week. 

YOUR SILICON VALLEY (LIBERAL) OVERLORDS

A report was released on Friday stating state attorneys general will launch antitrust investigation into big tech – Facebook and Google. 

 

New York Attorney General Letitia James said: 

 

“We will use every investigative tool at our disposal to determine whether Facebook’s actions may have endangered consumer data, reduced the quality of consumers’ choices, or increased the price of advertising.”

 

It’s about time someone is looking into it. 

 

This is action is long overdue.

TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME

Another actor is at it. 

 

This time it’s Sean Penn. He said President Trump’s re-election bid is in jeopardy because young people will vote. 

 

Penn was crying in 2016 and he’s crying again. 

 

I can’t wait until we give him a two finger salute in 2020! #KAG

INVESTOR INSIGHTS – Market Update 

First, you need to form a hypothesis of what’s going to happen.

 

Why? 

 

Because if you trade without conviction, you won’t be able to stay in trades and let your winners ride. 

 

And to form a hypothesis, we need to examine the current market environment. 

 

We are currently in a market that’s driven by headlines. The main focus is on the U.S. China trade war, global economic slowdown and the possibility of a U.S. recession. 

 

We know President Trump does not want the stock market to fall and he doesn’t want to see the country in a recession. However, he also wants to get a more favorable deal with China. 

 

We also know professional traders are selling this latest S&P 500 rally. 

 

How do I know? 

 

Take a look at the various markets. The bond yields are at their all-time lows and both bonds and gold have been rallying for a few months . That tells me we are in a “risk off” scenario. Traders are looking for a “safe haven”. 

 

However, the markets never make it that easy. And usually what ends up happening is a “maximum pain” scenario – the markets move in the direction that punishes the most traders. 

 

Since most traders are buying bonds and gold and shorting the S&P 500, the “maximum pain” scenario would be for the stock market to break out and make new all-time highs and for bonds and gold to collapse. If that happens, most traders will suffer… a lot. 

 

Could that happen? 

 

Well, we could get positive headlines leading up to the U.S. China trade talks in October and the Fed can cut interest rates by 25 basis points in September. 

 

Most traders would say: the U.S. China trade talks are fake, there will be no deal in October. They would also say that lowering the interest rates by 25 basis points won’t help drive the economy. And therefore, the S&P 500 has to be a good short. 

 

I don’t agree. And I actually think the opposite is likely to happen. 

 

I think we will have a rally in the stock market and gold and bonds will significantly decline. 

 

And that’s my hypothesis. 

 

Next, you have to determine how to actually trade your hypothesis. I use options because they give me the ability to maximize my profits. 

 

But that’s a story for another time…
