Five things to know before the market opens

Stock futures dipped slightly this morning, falling from yesterday’s rally.

Today, officials from Pfizer announced that it would apply for full vaccine approval in this country by month’s end. Should the company receive that approval, Pfizer would then have the ability to market its two-dose drug to consumers. Shares of the company were up 1.5% in the premarket on the news. Shares of CVS Health also shot up this morning after the company reported stellar earnings for the first quarter.

Tuesday also marks the beginning of restrictions for travelers coming from India, as that country navigates a surge in virus cases. There are more than 20 million cases right now.

What else should you know about the market before you start your day today?

Even after the blood-clot pause, Americans still want the J&J vaccine

A new survey shows that nearly 20% of Americans who have yet to get the vaccine will still opt for the Johnson & Johnson version, even after the blood-clot scare.

According to the latest data, about 17% of Americans say they’d prefer to receive the single-shot drug over either of the other, two-dose options. That number reflects a decrease from the 29% who felt this way back in March, before the blood clot issue.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention initially recommended pausing the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after some women experienced rare but severe blood clots after their vaccinations. That recommendation was lifted on April 23, after it was determined that the benefits dwarfed the risks.

What else does this survey show?

There is a Wall Street saying that goes like this: “Sell in May, go away.” But that does not appear to be coming to fruition this morning. During premarket trading, shares of stocks yoked to an economic recovery were performing well.

Over the weekend, Charlie Munger of Berkshire Hathaway shared who would take over for Warren Buffett as the company’s CEO (more on that story at the link, below). And during his annual meeting, Buffett expressed his disgust with Robinhood, saying the company has “become a very significant part of the casino aspect, the casino group, that has joined into the stock market in the last year or year and a half.”

And Apple is set to deal with one of its biggest legal battle in years, beginning today.

And finally, this morning Verizon shared that it plans to sell its media group to Apollo Global management.

Shannon Walker, Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover and Soichi Noguchi arrived at the International Space Station in November, logging an epic five-plus months in space.

When they arrived back on Earth yesterday, mission control quipped: “We welcome you back to planet Earth and thanks for flying SpaceX. For those of you enrolled in our frequent flyer program, you’ve earned 68 million miles on this voyage.”

It’s Saturday, so I thought I’d come from a little out of left field. Instead of talking about financial trivia, today I thought we’d zoom in on some more general minutiae. On this day in 1930, our solar system got a little bit bigger. But later, we whittled it back down? What happened on this day in history that is still up in the air when it comes to our astronomical understanding.

It’s Saturday, so let me preface this segment by saying not to take yourself so seriously.

As it turns out, if you’re dark brown to the tune of hex #654321 or lighter, you might need to turn in your white privilege card.

And while the article I’m referencing is satire, the sentiment that inspired that push is absolutely not.

Because race-baiting in America has just gotten insane.

For those of us who are a little more sensitive to how others feel about our actions (aka, those who embrace the “do unto others approach” to life) this may come as a bit of a surprise.

So, as we start out this morning, let’s take a look at why (even in a satire format) I feel like this is a topic that we need to discuss…

This is what a ''pure lie'' looks like

Current President Joe Biden has been throwing a lot of shade on former President Donald Trump’s way over the border crisis that’s raging right now.

But former Department of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, blasted those claims yesterday after Joe Biden claimed that Wolf’s agency “stonewalled” Biden’s transition team.

In essence, he’s saying that these delays directly correspond to the contemporary crisis at our southern border.

Here’s the back story:

Biden claimed in an interview with The Today Show that aired Friday morning that Wolf’s department refused to share information with Biden’s transition team, leaving a mess for Biden’s administration to clean up after he took office. Wolf ‘responded to the claims on Twitter and accused Biden of lying while trying to scapegoat former President Donald Trump’s administration for Biden’s policy failures.’

But according to Wolf, that isn’t the full picture.

“While I respect the Presidency, this is a pure lie. The admin is looking for any reason to explain the crisis they created. We briefed the transition team numerous, numerous times,” Wolf said.

Here’s what we know about this dispute so far…

Investors awoke to news that Amazon shares had climbed 2% in premarket trading just one day after the giant reported blowout quarterly results. But even all of that good news wasn’t enough.

U.S. stock futures fell this morning, and the data drop from the government’s 8:30 a.m. ET March personal income data is on everyone’s radar.

Because after the latest round of stimulus, income should have gone upwards of 20% last month.

With one day left in April, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 were up more than 6% for the month. The Dow’s monthly gain was a little more than half that.

And while Amazon had some great news in the realm of earning, Twitter wasn’t nearly as fortunate.

Joe Biden delivers a speech to a Joint Session of Congress, April 28, 2021

Senator Ted Cruz caught some flak for falling asleep during Biden’s boring address to Congress. But it turns out that he wasn’t the only one….

“I’ve got to tell you, most of the folks that I’ve spoken to here did not actually watch Joe Biden’s address last night,” Thompson told MSNBC anchor Hallie Jackson. “I’ve spoken to around a dozen folks and only two of them watched and listened to what he had to say last night.”

“Yeah, we’re seeing some of what Priscilla touched on there,” Barber responded. “About two-thirds of the people who we have tried to talk to here said they did not watch the president’s address — not necessarily because they were boycotting it or intentionally not watching it, they just went to bed, they had to work, they had other things. This wasn’t top of their to-do list, though many said they plan to catch up on it sometime today.”

For a President who claims the largest number of votes in recorded American history, something just isn’t adding up.

Nielsen reported yesterday that just 22.6 million viewers tuned in Wednesday.

Five things to know before the market opens

Despite all of Joe Biden’s doom and gloom and taxes and regulations, Wall Street is poised to open higher in today’s trading. In fact, Nasdaq futures are looking especially robust. Those very impressive earnings from Apple and Facebook certainly helped.

Three Dow stocks (McDonald’s, Merck, and Caterpillar) all reported earning before this morning’s bell.

The government will also unveil an initial look at the first-quarter GDP and the weekly look at jobless claims this morning.

These new data points follow one day after the Fed decided to help interest rates near zero and to continue their asset purchases. In the meantime, central bankers are offering their reassurances that they will keep monetary policy steady for a while, even in light of a strengthening economy and increased inflation.

Joe Biden delivers a speech to a Joint Session of Congress, April 28, 2021

After taking practically forever to do it, President Joe Biden finally stood up to address a joint session of Congress.

And everything that came out of his mouth was pretty terrifying. He lauded new crippling taxes, regulations that will strangle businesses, and exciting new ways that Democrats can steal elections into perpetuity.

Pretty much everything we expected…

During the evening, he went over a Democrat pork-packed wish list that he and his party will never pass on their own. So, instead, they decided to wrap up all of these disparate measures into one massive so-called infrastructure bill.

But despite the optimism shed by Biden, Harris, and Pelosi while on camera, this bill faces a very tough road – even in the House. There, Dems can only lose two votes and still hope to pass the bill without GOP support.

And that means extremists like AOC as well as more moderate “centrists” in pivotal swing districts will be extremely powerful.

But here’s what else it means…

Apple and Facebook will issue their earnings after the bell today.

In the meantime, US stock futures have held flat today. Investors are waiting to hear from the Chairman of the Fed, Jerome Powell, in the central bank’s post-meeting news conference scheduled for this afternoon. While the Fed isn’t expected to adjust our near-zero interest rates, or the pace of asset purchases, they know they still face questions. Especially about Powell’s willingness to let inflation run hot.

Whatever the administration decides to call it, America knows we’re facing a serious problem at the border.

Rodney S. Scott, who is the Chief of U.S. Border Patrol, is now making some waves after a memo he sent to Troy A. Miller – the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In it, he explains that he just can’t comply with the Biden administration’s push to soften the legal terms that refer to illegal immigration.

Last week, the administration sent out memos to immigration officials outlining the new leftist agenda and some changes in lingo that are a part of current federal statutes.

The Biden administration sent memos to immigration officials last week outlining their leftist agenda, which included no longer using terms that are part of U.S. federal statutes.

“This memorandum serves as my official nonconcurrence to the proposed updated terminology for U.S. Customs and Border Protection communications and materials. I will not undermine this effort; however, I cannot endorse it.”

It’s Tuesday, and the deluge of tech earnings that has started will continue after the opening bell gets rung. The line up will start with Google’s parent company Alphabet and top Dow stock, Microsoft.

While investors are waiting, US stock futures have stayed flat since the Nasdaq closed yesterday at a new record for the first time since February. The S&P 500 also saw yesterday close at a new record.

The Dow, on the other hand, saw a modest fall, but is still less than 1% away from its April 16th record.

But earnings aren’t the only thing on investors’ minds today. The Fed is kicking off a two-day April policy meeting today. While the central bank isn’t expected to take any official action, it will be busy defending its willingness to let inflation run hot.

This is an important discussion since two popular commodities (corn and copper) have hit multiyear highs. Both corn and copper have almost doubled in the last 12 months alone.

So, what else are investors expecting to find out today?

When will Psaki ''circle back'' on this?

A story that wasn’t slated to break until August of this year broke early, and it’s certainly causing the Biden administration some discomfort.

Not to mention the sticky situation that John Kerry finds himself in. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif offered some very candid answers about a number of things. But what has Kerry in the hot seat is the startling revelation that John Kerry told Iran that Israel (our top ally in the Middle East) was not only behind but responsible for hundreds of attacks on Iranian assets in Syria.

When asked about it yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki refused to answer the question. “We’re not going to comment on leaked tapes,” Psaki responded.

In a separate press conference, a State Department official refused to answer the same question.

And now, there are growing calls for John Kerry to either resign or get fired from his post in the administration.

What do you think – did he actually say it? And if so, what’s going to happen next?

Monday morning was a mixed bag for stock futures as investors anticipated a slew of earnings reports from tech companies. Today, for instance, Tesla reveals its latest financial data after the bell. Shares of that company held steady this morning. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and Alphabet are also slated to share their latest earnings this week.

Economists are also anticipating a 2.2% increase in durable goods orders for the month of March. That report is due out this morning. And tomorrow the Federal Reserve will begin its two-day policy meeting.

Later this week, the government will release its look at gross domestic quarter for the first quarter.

And President Joe Biden will reveal his American Families Plan in detail at some point this week, part of his larger Build Back Better campaign.

Over the weekend, states began administering the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, after health officials lifted a recommended pause due to rare but severe blood clots. The drug’s return to the market is especially good news as a new trend takes shape: millions of people in this country are skipping out on their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.

According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 8% of Americans who received their first shot did not return for a second. That equates to more than five million people.

Some say they worry about side effects, while others felt a single dose was enough to secure some protections. And some providers did not have enough supply to give patients the same brand for their second shot.

Experts say this is a problem.

With this “side job” I show traders exactly how to access a little-known portal in their brokerage accounts to potentially amass a quick fortune.

British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell pleaded not guilty on Friday to federal sex trafficking charges in the U.S. case accusing her of helping the late financier Jeffrey Epstein recruit and sexually abuse girls.

Maxwell, 59, entered her plea through her attorney before U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan. The charges had been included in an eight-count indictment unveiled on March 29.

Prosecutors have accused Maxwell of grooming and paying a girl who, starting at age 14, gave Epstein nude massages and engaged in sex acts with him from 2001 to 2004, and that the girl recruited others to offer erotic massages.

They previously had charged Maxwell with helping Epstein recruit and groom three other girls for him to sexually abuse from 1994 to 1997.

Her trial is scheduled for July 12.

Hey there, Bullets Fans –

On this day in 1999, this company was delisted from the Nasdaq. They closed out the day at just $0.16 per share. Who was it? (And did you know you can still buy shares of it today?)

Five things you need to know before you start your day

Stock futures have seen a modest rise this morning, just one day after Wall Street pumped the brakes on news that President Biden wants to propose much higher capital gains taxes for the rich.

What does “much higher” mean?

Well, according to both Bloomberg and The New York Times, those earning over $1,000,000 would see their capital gains rise from the 20% they pay now to a rate of 39.6%.

That news led to declines of about 1% each in all of the major indexes.

On the digital currency side of the economy, BTC and some of the other bigger players saw their values sink – ultimately shaving about $200 billion from the global market.

Police cam footage from Columbus

Democrats have stooped to a new low in their quest for ratings and sensationalism and insane wokeness. Because now, instead of discouraging children and teens from stabbing each other and getting into knife fights, these leftists have a new agenda to just let it happen.

In the words of Bree Newsome, “Teenagers have been having fights, including fights involving knives, for eons,” meaning a very long time. “We do not need police to address these situations by showing up to the scene and using a weapon against one of the teenagers.”

They want it protected as if it’s a human right for teens to stand out in the yard, brandishing knives and other bladed weapons without any interference from police.

And this is not parody or satire. And like you and me, Tucker Carlson has had enough.

“Stabbing people has long been taboo in this country, especially for those under 18. For decades, young Americans have hidden their switchblades, their stilettos, their K-Bars, and machetes. Kids were forced to live as if plunging blades into strangers was something to be ashamed of instead of a normal, healthy part of childhood. No more. Knife fights are human rights. Stabbing can finally come out of the closet.”
