Now, five officers who were connected to the 60-year-old’s case have been fired, authorities say. Officers had apparently been questioning Harvey about an aggravated assault they were investigating. They left the room, and, when they returned, they found Harvey dead. He had wounds from his shoelaces around his neck, investigators said. “While we cannot provide justice for the Harvey family, we can ensure accountability for the policies we did not follow and the actions we did not take,” said the mayor of Savannah. “I do not believe there was malicious intent on the part of the officers involved, but the result was deadly. Stock futures and the 10-year Treasury yield were muted this morning as investors awaited the ending of a two-day Federal Reserve meeting that could indicate whether monetary policy changes are on the horizon.
Although no immediate shifts are expected, experts on Wall Street are hoping to better gauge when the central bank will begin to taper its bond-buying program and increase interest rates.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is slated to speak about the meeting at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, about a half-hour after the bank delivers its policy statement.
Meanwhile, a report regarding last month’s housing starts and permits will be released this morning, with analysts anticipating a 3.9% gain in new construction.
