On this day, in 1999, the Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit this major milestone…What was it?

5 Things to Know Before the Stock Market Opens Today

Stock futures slipped this morning even after a rally on Friday brought all the major averages ahead. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had increased more than 1.4%, while the S&P 500 had climbed almost 1.7%. The Nasdaq, meanwhile, had closed 1.2% ahead.

Also this morning, Credit Suisse and Nomura took a “highly significant hit” from the hedge fund fallout. And the Ever Given container ship that has been stopping up traffic (and costing a ton of money) in the Suez Canal has finally been partially floated.

President Joe Biden plans to reveal the first part of his gigantic infrastructure plan this week, which will focus largely on refurbishing roadways. The second part of the plan, which could cost $3 trillion, will be unveiled “in just a couple of weeks,” according to the White House press secretary.

And Dr. Anthony Fauci said this morning that the nation has yet to turn the corner of the pandemic, and is, instead, “at the corner.”

Right now, the seven-day-average of daily cases is increasing. Last week, it was up 12% more than the week prior.

This health expert doesn't know that herd immunity will be reached in coming months

A top health expert says that he doesn’t know that this country will achieve herd immunity within the next couple of months. According to the World Health Organization, “‘herd immunity,’ also known as ‘population immunity,’ is a concept  used for vaccination, in which a population can be protected from a certain virus if a threshold of vaccination is reached.”

According to Dr. Francis Collins, who is the director for the National Institutes of Health, there are still a number of people who would need to be convinced to get the vaccine by “trustworthy voices.”

“This concern about [the vaccines] having been rushed can be answered by pointing out how the speed was achieved, which was by basically getting rid of the downtimes that traditionally occur when a vaccine is being developed and results in it taking [years].”

What else did he have to say on this issue?

5 Things to Know Before The Stock Market Opens Today

This morning, futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 were slated to build on yesterday’s positive momentum. Although the 10-year Treasury yield was elevated today, it was not approaching its 14-month record.

Today investors will pore over income and spending data from the Commerce Department. Economists anticipate that income fell 7%, while spending dropped 0.8% in the month of February.

And the office-sharing company WeWork has reached a new agreement to go public. Meanwhile, shares of GameStop increased about 10% during premarket trading after gaining 52% yesterday.

Tesla forced CEO Elon Musk to get rid of a tweet that appeared to threaten labor organizers, and the company was also told to rehire an employee who was a union advocate.

What else should you have on your radar today?

This is Trump's reaction to Biden's 'ridiculous' press conference

During an interview yesterday, former President Donald Trump reacted to his successor’s first-ever press conference.

“Well, they were strange questions, and they were asked in a very interesting way,” Trump said. “It was like softballs, like you are throwing softballs up, and it’s just a different world. Nobody has seen anything like it. You know it. You know it better than anybody. You cover it so well. And it’s very sad to watch, actually, they are feeding him questions. They are easy questions. I noticed Peter Doocy didn’t get to ask a question today.”

Biden appeared to use a reference sheet of paper to determine which reporters he would take questions from, and many conservative news organizations were not included in that pool. Big surprise there, I know.

“And there could be no difficult questions,” Trump continued. “And they were ready to rip the microphone away if somebody did get a little bit testy. You know, he just, look, the whole thing is ridiculous. You know it, and so do I.

This morning, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that between the stimulus package and the accelerated vaccinations, the U.S. economy is on track for a fast recovery, thereby allowing the central bank to ease up on some of its support. Futures fell after that interview.

Investors this morning are also keeping their eyes on the latest look at initial jobless claims, with analysts anticipating 35,000 fewer claims than the previous week.

And AstraZeneca revised its trial data from 79% to 76% efficacy. This news comes as over 25% of Americans have already received at least one dose of the vaccine.

President Joe Biden will finally hold his first solo press conference tonight, and you’ll likely hear him boast about vaccinations and the economic progress as of late. That said, he’ll also face many questions regarding border security and gun control.

And finally, a House panel will hear testimony from Big Tech leaders today about misinformation on their platforms.

Another week, another Cuomo scandal

In the latest episode of “What scandal is Cuomo facing now?” it has been revealed that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo secured preferential treatment for his family during the early days of the pandemic. This happened against the backdrop of a policy that would kill many more nursing home residents than he admitted.

According to The Albany Times Union, Cuomo directed top-ranking health officials to give his family members, and other people his administration deemed worthy first-priority virus tests.

“Members of Cuomo’s family including his brother, his mother and at least one of his sisters were also tested by top health department officials — some several times, the sources added,” according to The Albany Times Union.

Of course, his brother (and CNN host) Chris has remained mum on the subject. And so has CNN.

Stocks were set to bounce this morning while the 10-year Treasury yield continued its stabilization. Also today, the Senate Banking Committee will hear from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell with their economic testimony. Yesterday both Yellen and Powell agreed that high valuations are no cause for panic.

Meanwhile, shares of GameStop sunk 12% this morning after the company said it may sell more equity shares. The company also released fairly disappointing quarterly results yesterday.

And shares of Intel increased this morning after the company yesterday announced that it would build new chip plants in Arizona.

Amazon’s future CEO also announced his successor, and Tesla’s Elon Musk says consumers can now buy his car with bitcoin.

Ted Cruz is pushing back against gun control proposals in the wake of the Colorado shooting

Yesterday Senator Ted Cruz said that his Democratic colleagues were taking advantage of tragedies like the massacre in Boulder, Colorado, to further their own political agenda. He argued against their gun control proposals.

“I agree. It is time for us to do something,” Cruz said. “And every time there’s a shooting, we play this ridiculous theater where this committee gets together and proposes a bunch of laws that would do nothing to stop these murders. What happens in this committee after every mass shooting is Democrats propose taking away guns from law-abiding citizens because that’s their political objective.”

He added: “When you disarm law-abiding citizens, you make them more likely to be victims. If you want to stop these murders, go after the murderers.”

What else did Cruz and his colleagues have to say on the matter?

One year after the latest bull market began, stock futures are drooping this morning.

Today the chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will speak about the economy before a House committee. While Yellen foresees full employment by next year, Powell is expected to take a more cautiously optimistic tone.

Meanwhile, a group of health experts said this morning that AstraZeneca’s vaccine trial data may actually include outdated information. This news comes as the rate of virus infections increases across the U.S.

Biden and Obama are still BFFs - press secretary says they are in contact to 'consult and talk about a range of issues'

According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, President Joe Biden asks former President Barack Obama for advice on a “regular” basis.

In an briefing yesterday, Psaki said: “…They were not just the President and Vice President; they are friends, and they consult and talk about a range of issues. And, you know, I would expect that continues through the course of President Biden’s presidency. That can be done over the phone, it turns out… They keep in regular touch and our teams are in regular touch about a range of issues.”

She suggested that the former President and Vice President duo would also discuss the issue of healthcare.

Psaki’s reveal about the depth of the Biden-Obama relationship is merely the latest signal that Biden is unfit for presidency. Last week he stumbled up the stairs to Air Force One. That same week referred to Kamala Harris as “President Harris.”

Doctors are now worried about the president’s cognitive health.

As the 10-year Treasury yield retreated this morning, futures tied to the Nasdaq Composite increased. All three major indexes logged losses last week.

Meanwhile, in a U.S. trial, the AstraZeneca vaccine was determined to be 79% effective in preventing illness, while it was 100% effective in preventing hospitalization and severe illness.

This news comes as 21 states are seeing a rise in the number of virus cases, as governors begin to relax restrictions. Although about 2.5 million Americans are receiving the vaccine each day, there is still an average of 54,000 new cases a day, data shows.

Even though the country is 'on the brink' of a full economic recovery, there will still be scarring, one expert says

The economic crisis catalyzed by the pandemic will leave scars that linger for a long time, even as the country nears a full recovery, one expert says. This means that potential for growth will be suppressed for long time to come.

“I’m hopeful we’re on the brink of completing this recovery,” said Thomas Barkin, who is the president of Richmond Federal Reserve Bank. “Vaccines are falling out, case rates and hospitalizations are falling, excess savings and fiscal stimulus should help fund pent-up demand from consumers who’re exhausted by isolation and freed up by vaccines and warmer weather.”

Indeed, the economy is expected to log 6.5% growth this next year, compared to a 3.5% loss last year.

But all of that positive momentum doesn’t make the scarring any less obvious. For instance, there has been a 6% decrease in the the number of parents who are participating in the labor force after the pandemic shuttered schools.

“If parents who left the workforce don’t return, that will have long-term negative implications for U.S. growth potential,” said Barkin.

What other scarring might we see?

Over the last couple of weeks, investors have been particularly preoccupied with increasing inflation and yield concerns, and it has almost felt like the threat of the virus has faded into the background. But the news that Paris, France was facing another lockdown put the pandemic back into focus.

“We all got comfortable thinking [the pandemic] was done or manageable, and it may turn out to still be a wild card,” said Peter Tchir of Academy Securities. “Nobody wants another year of lockdowns. The Paris story was not what the market wanted to hear. The market was not in a mood to receive more bad news.”

The CDC revised its social distancing guidelines for students in school

Most K-12 students can now sit three feet apart instead of six, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday, so long as they are wearing masks. The updated rule applies regardless of whether the community’s transmission of the virus is considered low, moderate, or even substantial.

However, in a high transmission area, middle and high school students would need to be six feet apart, unless assigned groups were maintained. Elementary school students would still be able to sit three feet apart.

“CDC is committed to leading with science and updating our guidance as new evidence emerges. Safe in-person instruction gives our kids access to critical social and mental health services that prepare them for the future, in addition to the education they need to succeed,” said the CDC director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

What else should you know about the updated guidelines?

Yesterday the 10-year Treasury yield skyrocketed to a 14-month high of 1.754%, sending tech stocks plummeting, and causing the Nasdaq to shed 3%. The S&P 500, also weighed down by tech names, drooped 1.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.5%.

But today, stock futures appear to be rebounding as the 10-year Treasury yield retreated slightly.

Shares of Nike fell almost 2% during premarket trading today, while FedEx shares soared 5%, as both companies released their third-quarter earnings.

Meanwhile, according to the CDC, the U.S. has now administered over 115 million doses of various vaccines, meaning that President Joe Biden reached his goal of administering 100 million shots within his first 100 days in office.

The White House press secretary accidentally called the border situation a 'crisis' before backtracking

Though the White House has attempted to avoid the word “crisis” when referring to the surge of illegal border crossings, Press Secretary Jen Psaki did use the term yesterday before backtracking slightly.

When she was asked about lending doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Mexico and Canada, Psaki said: “There have been exceptions set outside of–unrelated–to any vaccine doses or request for them that they would be partners in dealing with the crisis on the border.”

A reporter jumped on Psaki’s comment, asking if the White House was beginning to think of the situation at the border differently. Psaki said that there were “challenges,” but that President Joe Biden’s view that “No, we’ll be able to handle it” remains the same.

What else should you know about the Biden administration’s plan to deal with these “challenges”?

After Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reassured investors that there wouldn’t be higher interest rates anytime soon, stocks surged, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing above 33,000 for the first time. However this morning, the 10-year Treasury yield jumped again, this time to a high not seen in well over a year. This morning, it soared to 1.74%. And futures tied to the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 fell as a result.

The central bank also predicts that the unemployment rate in this country will drop to 4.5% this year from its 6.2% level last month. And economists expect that there will be 700,000 new claims for unemployment benefits in the Labor Department’s latest look at jobless claims, released this morning.

And in Washington today, lawmakers will be looking at two different immigration bills, as the crisis at the U.S.- Mexico border looms in the background.

For those people younger than 65, having the virus protected them from another infection 80% of the time. However that number drops down to 47% among those who are 65 and older.

“Our study confirms what a number of others appeared to suggest: reinfection with [the virus] is rare in younger, healthy people, but the elderly are at greater risk of catching it again,” said Dr. Steen Ethelbert. “Since older people are also more likely to experience severe disease symptoms, and sadly die, our findings make clear how important it is to implement policies to protect the elderly during the pandemic.”

What else should you know about this study?

This morning, stock futures remained largely unchanged, despite the 10-year Treasury yield’s continued climb. Investors are anticipating the Federal Reserve’s release of interest rate forecasts and an updated economic outlook. In his news conference later today, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will need to offer reassurances that even though the economy is recovering quickly, the central bank’s monetary policy doesn’t need to change.

And, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 15% of American adults have been fully vaccinated. This news comes as new infections continue to drop. Right now, daily cases have decreased approximately 80% since January.

And the White House does not have high expectations going into a U.S.-China meeting on Thursday.

Trump wants his supporters to know that the virus vaccine is safe

To all of his supporters, former President Donald Trump has this message: “Everybody, go get your shot.”

At least, that was part of his message when he spoke last month at the Conservative Political Action Conference. He reiterated the sentiment during an interview on Fox News last night.

He offered his stamp of approval of the shot to “a lot of people that don’t want to get it, and a lot of those people voted for me.”

He continued: “We have our freedoms and we have to live by that and I agree with that also. But it is a great vaccine. It is a safe vaccine and it is something that works.”

A recent poll suggested that about 30 percent of American adults are not interested in being inoculated.

Even though Trump had already recommended the vaccine at the CPAC conference, Dr. Anthony Fauci this weekend implored Trump to be more vocal on the issue: “I wish he would [campaign for the shots],” Fauci had said. “He has such an incredible influence over people in the Republican Party.”
